Throwbacks and retro lids are nice, but nothing beats an original. Back in 1954 Bell founder Roy Richter formed his first helmet out of fiberglass and named it the "500." That moment was ground zero for the modern motorsport helmet and it gave rise to an entire industry. Bell's new Custom 500 pays homage to Richter's original design and adds modern protective technology to bring the design up-to-date while still keeping the original's aesthetic. By combining a custom fiberglass layup with a specially designed EPS foam layer, Bell engineers were able to craft a helmet that is at once light weight, narrow in profile, and DOT-compliant. Adding custom paint-inspired graphics, chrome trim work (on some graphics) and a quilted liner, the new Custom 500 custom looks as good as it performs.

Quality helmet for the price

After a minor accident, I had to replace my carbon fiber (non-DOT) half helmet (yes, it saved my skull). I couldn't find a DOT half helmet I liked to replace my old one (LOW profile) so decided to try this Bell based on customer reviews on other sites. (It also keeps the NV sun off the sides of my face.) If you like the retro style, or want an open face helmet, this is a great helmet. I prefer the visibility afforded by wearing a half or open faced helmet. This helmet is well made with adequate padding inside. It is noisy as wind gets in through the sides, which also creates a bit of a "drag-chute" effect in a headwind (I don't use a face shield or wind screen). Long highway rides will probably require ear plugs - not an issue for me as I always did that with my half helmet anyway. My own real (personal) complaint is front-to-back fit is tight on my long-oval head. Although this helmet is the correct size based on measurements & charts, my head is a bit too long s o it puts a bit of pressure on my forehead. The more I wear it, the less the pressure, so it seems to be "breaking in" well enough. Based on my work commute, I get a lot of quality time w/ this helmet every day. That said, I may go ahead and get the "Stunt" version one day. I would recommend trying to find a dealer that has this helmet in stock so you can try it on before purchase.

Cons:
- noisy due to air getting in between cheeks and helmet (though not an issue for me as I usually wear half helmets)
- in a head wind, the gaps cause it to catch more wind than my half helmet did
- very round helmet not ideally suited for a long-oval head
