5A "Premium" from HJC
By Marimons Viator
I'm a continuous, long-term street rider on sport and naked bikes. This helmet is my first HJC, and helmet number 9 after (in no particular order) 2 from Arai, 3 from Shoei (one crash-tested), a Suomy, a KBC, and an Icon. Five of these I would consider "premiums" (both Arai, 2 Shoei, & the Suomy). The HJC RPHA-10 definitely qualifies as a "premium" helmet. It's well-made, very light-weight, and the fit & finish are high-quality. The shell is hand-laid, glass/carbon-fiber/Aramid composite, and the US helmet is both SNELL and DOT rated.

At 59.5 cm, intermediate oval shape, the "large" gives me a very comfortable "race" fit (snug). Cheeks are snug, but not tight, and there is no contact on my ears. The next size up is definitely too large, and I wouldn't even attempt the next size down. The neck strap is fully padded. I feel it is set slightly farther back toward my neck than ideal, though I don't notice while riding. The liner is fully removable, as is t he chin curtain and breath shield.

In use, the helmet is noticeably lighter than my next most comfortable helmet (ironically, a relatively inexpensive KBC VR-5), and very aerodynamic. Head-checks are no problem. I wear a back protector, and I do notice that the back of the helmet can push up against a heavier jacket collar if I'm leaning forward at all.

Ventilation is very good. In cold weather, it can be a little too good, but there's no danger of suffocating under the breath guard on a hot day. I wear glasses while riding (either sunglasses over contacts or prescriptions under a smoke visor), and I notice that I can easily fog up my glasses (especially wrap-around sunglasses).

Shield removal and replacement is literally a 60-second (or less) task, and shields are set up to take a pin-lock fog insert (one was included free with mine). Probably the most questionable aspect of the shield design is the center-placed lock. The lock works v ery well in sealing the shield against the gasket, and for preventing the shield from lifting at high-speed. However, it takes some practice to unlock it with a gloved hand while riding, and I feel that the first detent up to the "city" position is a little too tight.

Vision out is excellent, and I don't find the center lock to be a visual nuisance. The shields are flat, optically correct, and can be adapted to use tear-offs. Peripheral vision is excellent, almost to the limit of what I can perceive.

I always wear earplugs, but the helmet is toward the "quieter" spectrum for a well-ventilated sport helmet, and there is no whistling.

This helmet competes pretty closely with the likes of other premium helmet maker, and for a high-quality sport helmet, it is definitely bargain-priced.
